One of the best known and most loved folk-tales in Wales is the story of Gelert. Gelert was a dog who belonged to Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd. As a Prince, he was a keen hunter and spent much of his time in the surrounding countryside. One day, Llywelyn went hunting without Gelert who was unaccountably absent. When he returned, Gelert came bounding up to him, his mouth dripping with blood. Alarmed, the Prince hastened to find his baby son. To his horror, he saw that his infant's cot was empty and the floor and bedclothes covered with blood. The frantic father took out his sword and plunged it into Gelert's heart who let out a dying yelp. Immediately afterwards, Llywelyn hears the cries of his baby infant and finds it unharmed under the cradle. To his suprise he then discovers the dead body of a wolf that Gelert had killed to protect the baby. Llywelyn is overcome with remorse and he buries the dog with great ceremony, yet he still could hear Gelert's dying yelp. After that day Llywelyn is said to have never smiled again. He buried Gelert in Beddgelert, which means Gelert's Grave in Welsh. This charm is about protection, friendship and companionship both for our loved ones and also our cherished pets.
